Motivation Monday

First Motivation Monday and I couldn’t be more excited! This is a quote my mother sent me while I was in Montréal; she told me the story after I returned.

“Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one’s lifetime.” -Mark Twain

After hosting two exchange students from Francophone countries, my mother ended up on the email list for the program we went through. This time around, just days before their plane was set to arrive, there were still students who hadn’t been placed with families, so the company sent this quote in an email as part of their attempt to encourage people to host a student. Unfortunately, my family is definitely not in a position to host this summer, but hopefully we will do it again in the future!

If the opportunity every arises that you can host a student, do it. It is one of the greatest cultural experiences I have have participated in, and it is so rewarding. I have two friends that I still keep in touch with, and one of which I actually got to visit in France. The other girl has now come back to stay with us two more times since then! Now having been on both sides of the exchange, I am able to see just how enriching the experience really is. Both parties learn so much about the other’s culture, but what you don’t expect is just how much you learn about yourself and your own culture. Looking at what you might perceive as your boring town with nothing to do, suddenly turns into new opportunities to share with your new friend.

Have you ever hosted someone or been the student being hosted? Share your experience in the comments below!
